website analysis

For my coursework I am going to create a website for a new tv channel, therefore I am going to evaluate three existing television website, this will give me an insight into things I could include in mine and things not to include that don’t look good.
The first website i will be evaluating is film 4’s website in which the homepage looks like;

When looking at the website the first thing to notice is the background image of the production studio, this is a good background as the genre of the channel is film, this represents it’s genre without having to say what genre the channel is.
The next thing is the logo at the top left of the page, as this is conventional for the majority of websites, it is used as representation of identity, it’s a way for the audience to know the organisation in which the websites is for.
The text used is white, this looks good on the dark black background as it stands out and is easily readable by all types of viewers even those who are visually impaired. They also use red text in which is also easy to see and stands out on the black and is used to recognise hyperlinks, as red is also used when the menu bar at the top of the page is hovered over, The red and white colour theme is consistent throughout this page and the other pages of the website and they are also the colours used in the logo.
Also on this page they have used a tabbed menu with 4 tabs in which on each tab shows different options of different genre’s This page also uses a drag and drop timeline bar in which shows three advertisements for films that will appear in that particularshowing on film 4,  this is used as a centre piece as it’s interesting, eye catching and makes the page look different to just a text based page, it adds interaction to the page.
day selected, this is good because it allows the viewer to see what’s on in the week however with it only showing 3 programs for each day it’s limited and could show more, this would be something I would think about with my site.
And finally at the bottom of the homepage it contains a “new on film 4” section in which when hovered over the images enlarge in which is good because it makes it clearer to see the image.
All the images used in the site are good representations of their topics; they are all good quality images which suggest the channel shows good quality films in a good quality picture on screen.
The website also uses an internal web search bar, this helps with navigation around the website as the user can enter their search and it will take them directly to the information.

Dave is also another tv channel in which has a website, this site also has a set theme of a dark grey background with white text, this is dull, and not very advertising to look at Although it sticks to consistency like the other and it make the text stand out well so it's easy to read.
many websites use a conventional layout working with the most important items at the top and the least important items at the botom, you would normally assiciate the logo and another main image representing the idea's of the tvb channel to appear at the top, although the logo is at the top the rest ofthe layout of this site is slightly uncommon as it’s not well organised and not very user friendly, this makes it difficult for some viewers to use.
The main menu bar across the top is small and doesn’t particularly stand out above anything else because it's the same colour scheme in which is keeping it consistent with it's house style but it means that there's nothing to let the reader assosiate it as being a menu, the navigation of the site if it’s not very easily seen it may cause confusion and problems for the viewers.
the layout is good because it means there no dominance to the page, there's nothing standing out taking the attrension away from anything else, although this may mean that things that need to standout like competitions or new tv programs coming won't be as noticable on the page it does mean that things on the page are not ignored and signifies that everything is as imprtant as each other.
on the homepage there is nothing majorly important or interactive and my bored the reader, it shows no real sence of what the channel stands for or represents in which as i am a fan of this channel i know it contains action packed documentry style programs such as top gear (home of motoring) however there no suggestion from this page to the genre of the channel whihc may put the viewer off however it may also make peopkle watch the program to get a insight.
